U.S. and Britain Point Fingers at China for Secret Online Monitoring

US and British officials on Monday, 25 March 2024 have leveled serious accusations against China, alleging state-linked hackers’ involvement in cyber campaigns aimed at political figures and critical infrastructure. This move is anticipated to heighten already tense relations between the West and Beijing.

Both nations have imposed sanctions on China’s prominent hacking units, implicating Beijing’s top intelligence agency in extensive efforts to infiltrate America’s vital systems, including electrical grids and defense mechanisms. Furthermore, China stands accused of pilfering the voting records of a staggering 40 million British citizens.

British Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden minced no words as he addressed Parliament, unequivocally stating that Chinese state-affiliated actors spearheaded two malevolent cyber campaigns targeting democratic institutions and lawmakers. Dowden highlighted a particular breach on the Electoral Commission, a critical body overseeing U.K. elections, which occurred between 2021 and 2022.

The Electoral Commission detected the breach in October 2022, but the revelation was not made public until the following year. The hackers infiltrated the database, accessing personal information, including names and addresses, of individuals registered to vote in Britain from 2014 to 2022.

In response, the Chinese Embassy in the U.K. vehemently denied the accusations, labeling them as baseless fabrications and malicious attacks. The embassy spokesperson reiterated China’s staunch opposition to all forms of cyber aggression, asserting the country’s commitment to combatting such activities within the confines of the law.

These allegations have escalated diplomatic tensions, exacerbating existing strains between China and Western powers. As global cybersecurity concerns intensify, the international community watches closely, awaiting potential repercussions and further developments in this high-stakes geopolitical saga.

In a recent twist in his New York civil fraud case, Donald Trump has taken a strategic step by posting a $175 million bond. This move effectively puts a temporary pause on the collection of the hefty $454 million he owes. The purpose behind this action is to prevent the state from seizing his assets while he appeals the ruling, as mentioned in a court filing.

The legal saga of the former president took an interesting turn on April 2, 2024, when an appeals court granted Trump the ability to delay payment of the full bond while he pursues his appeal. However, there was a condition attached to this decision – Trump had to post a partial $175 million bond within 10 days. This ruling came after a New York appellate court set a deadline for Trump to provide the funds, following a previous agreement to reduce the required amount in order to halt the enforcement process.

Furthermore, the court has also put a hold on other aspects of the judgment against Trump and his co-defendants. This includes restrictions on their involvement in New York businesses and a prohibition on Trump obtaining loans from New York financial institutions.
